Orange is a city located in Orange County, California. It is approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north of the county seat, Santa Ana. Known as “The OC,” Orange County isn't Los Angeles, an important distinction for us locals, even though we live just below the larger than life city. Orange County encompasses Huntington Beach, Anaheim (also known as Disneyland), Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, San Juan Capistrano, Costa Mesa, Buena Park, Irvine and Santa Ana. Six Orange County cities are on the Pacific coast, including Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente. Cultural and entertainment facilities include Disneyland Resort, Angel Stadium, Christ Cathedral (formerly Crystal Cathedral), City National Grove of Anaheim (a live concert venue), Discovery Cube Orange County, the Honda Center, home of the NHL (National Hockey League) Anaheim Ducks and the Anaheim Center conventions. As one of the southernmost counties in the state, Orange County remains California's premier beach vacation region. Saint Junipero Serra y Ferrer and the first components of the Portolá Expedition arrived in present-day San Diego, south of present-day Orange County, in mid-1769. It has its own airport, Orange County Airport (SNA), but it is also close to Los Angeles International Airport and Long Beach Airport.
After several failed attempts in previous sessions, the California legislature passed a bill authorizing the part of Los Angeles County south of Coyote Creek to hold a referendum on whether to remain part of Los Angeles County or separate and form a new county to be called “Orange,” according to indicated by the legislature. Orange Coast was established in 1974 and is the oldest continuously published lifestyle magazine in the region. Orange County benefited from the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway, a streetcar connecting Los Angeles to Santa Ana and Newport Beach, on July 4, 1904. The center of Orange County includes the oldest and most densely populated sections of the county and is a haven for those seeking Victorian architecture, as well as ethnic enclaves for Latinos and Vietnamese.
The majority of the population lives in central and northern Orange County, and cities such as Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange and Huntington Beach have traditional centers. Other Fortune 1000 companies in Orange County include Beckman Coulter in Brea, Quiksilver in Huntington Beach and Abria Healthcare Group in Lake Forest. A less formal destination is the Orange County coast, which stretches from north to south and covers beach areas and those who enjoy water recreation, such as surfing, sailing and swimming.
