When the name Orange County was first proposed, there weren't many oranges. Most of the locals grew grapes and raised pigs, but in an effort to better promote the area, the county was looking for oranges. The name became official in 1889. The migrants arrived en masse and many planted small citrus fruits. The Orange County name was created to promote immigration in the area.
The name suggests that oranges and other citrus fruits can grow well in the area, making it perfect for anyone who wants to move to the area for a living. Many citrus, avocado and berry farms have been established in the county over the years, and the boysenberry farm run by Walter Knott is among the most prominent spaces. Orange County benefited from the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway, a streetcar connecting Los Angeles to Santa Ana and Newport Beach, on July 4, 1904. Cultural and entertainment facilities include Disneyland Resort, Angel Stadium, Christ Cathedral (formerly Crystal Cathedral), City National Grove of Anaheim (a live concert venue), Discovery Cube Orange County, the Honda Center, home of the NHL (National Hockey League) Anaheim Ducks and the Anaheim Center conventions. Retail complexes include Anaheim GardenWalk, Anaheim Marketplace (which claims to be the largest indoor exchange meeting in Orange County with more than 200 vendors), MainPlace Mall, Orange Town & Country, and The Outlets at Orange, originally a mall called The City, which was the centerpiece of a usage project planned mixed from the 70s development with the same name. Although single-family homes constitute the dominant landscape for most of the county, northern and central Orange County is relatively more urbanized and dense compared to areas beyond Irvine, which are less dense, although they are still contiguous and mostly suburban rather than exurban. In the north, the San Gabriel River also briefly crosses Orange County and flows into the Pacific on the Los Angeles-Orange County line between the cities of Long Beach and Seal Beach. Orange County SC is a United Soccer League team and is the only professional soccer club in Orange County.
Shopping in Orange County focuses on regional malls, large energy centers, and smaller malls. Former and current Orange County SC players include Richard Chaplow, Bright Dike, Maykel Galindo, Carlos Borja and goalkeeper Amir Abedzadeh. The city became one of the centers of the local citrus industry and, in the 1920s, oranges became the city's main crop. More recently, state droughts in California have further tested Orange County's water safety.
With just over three million people, Orange County is the country's sixth-largest county by population. The area now known as Orange was founded in 1871 by two Los Angeles lawyers, Alfred Beck Chapman and Andrew Glassell, and was first called “Richland”. But probably the best evidence, he says, comes from James Guinn, one of the county's earliest historians, who connects the name to political efforts to create a separate Orange County. Orange Coast was established in 1974 and is the oldest continuously published lifestyle magazine in the region.
